Becoming A Local
Owning In North Beach
North Beach is one of San Francisco’s most walkable neighborhoods, with cafés, bakeries, and restaurants lining Columbus Avenue and Grant Avenue. Washington Square sits at its heart, a historic park with open lawns facing the twin spires of Saints Peter and Paul Church, an architectural landmark. The neighborhood’s literary history lives on at City Lights, a designated landmark founded in 1953, and in Jack Kerouac Alley, a pedestrian lane between Columbus and Grant. Broadway brings music and dining after dark, while Coit Tower, atop neighboring Telegraph Hill, offers murals and sweeping views. The waterfront and the Financial District are a short walk away.
North Beach takes its name from a shoreline that once reached the area in the 1800s, before landfill pushed the waterfront several blocks north. Much of the neighborhood was rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake and fire, so many of its older residences date to that post-earthquake era. Victorian homes sit alongside duplexes, multiplexes, and mid-century modern apartment buildings, creating a dense, varied streetscape. Homes for sale in North Beach include condos, classic flats, and the occasional single-family home, many tucked along side streets and alleys just steps from Columbus Avenue and Washington Square.
